At HCSEPTA, we believe in the transformative power of advocacy to support and uplift students with special needs. Our initiatives focus on enhancing communication, promoting inclusion, and ensuring access to essential services within our schools. Here’s a brief overview of our key initiatives:

ESE Parent Rep Initiative

Connecting Families and Schools

The ESE Parent Rep Initiative places dedicated parent representatives within local school PTAs to act as liaisons between ESE families, school staff, and the broader school community. Our goal is to improve communication, promote inclusion, and advocate for ESE students’ needs. Our efforts creating this program were recognized by the Florida PTA with an award at the 2024 Leadership Conference. Join us for our current workshop series or watch past workshops.

Project ABA Rights

Protecting Access to ABA Therapy

Project ABA Rights is committed to safeguarding and expanding access to high-quality and appropriate Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy in schools. This initiative advocates for clear policies, educated stakeholders, and consistent, in-classroom ABA support for qualifying students with autism and other special needs. HCSEPTA partners with Project ABA Rights on various initiatives with shared goals.

  • Encouraging Hillsborough County Public Schools (and surrounding school districts) to adopt a clear and comprehensive policy regarding ABA in school.
  • Advocating for Florida Lawmakers to remove ambiguity in the current state laws surrounding ABA in schools
  • Educating district staff, principals, teachers, and families about the impact of high-quality ABA therapy
  • Speaking at School Board Meetings and connecting with district officials and lawmakers

2024 Hillsborough County Millage Referendum

The Hillsborough County Special Education PTA (HCSEPTA) is committed to advocating for our students and supporting the initiatives that can improve their educational experience. One of the most pressing issues on the ballot in November 2024 was the proposed millage referendum for Hillsborough County Public Schools. We believe it’s crucial to educate the public about this referendum and why it’s essential for the future of our children’s education.

  • Partnered with Families for Strong Public Schools and HCCPTA to produce a podcast series explaining public education funding. (Listen here)
  • Spoke at School Board and County Commissioner meetings to advocate for the referendum.
  • Organized sign-waving events at voting precincts to engage the community.
  • Presented to the Project ABA Rights group, sharing insights with over 2,500 members.
